Best Free Online Resources: Science Edition

To continue our series on the best free online resources for students, we've made a list of the best free online resources for science students. Whether you are in high school or college, here's a list of some great free websites with tools and resources to help you learn more about science topics. We’ve organized the resources into the following categories:

  • Content Resources

  • Study Tools

  • College-Specific Resources

Content Resources

Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers free, comprehensive courses and lectures on a variety of scientific topics. Covering popular subjects like physics, biology, and chemistry, chances are Khan Academy has got you covered. We’ve mentioned Khan Academy in past blog posts several times already, but that’s just because it’s such a great resource!

Youtube: Youtube is a great source for video explanations related to any scientific topic. If you need a 5-minute explanation of cell division, hundreds of people have already made detailed videos covering mitosis.

Study Tools

Quizlet: Quizlet is an online tool that allows you to study and practice any scientific concept including chemistry, biology, physics, and more. If you are studying a subject that requires significant memorization (e.g., biology), Quizlet should be one of your go-to study tools. Other users have already created countless flashcard decks to practice with, and the platform has built-in practice tests and games to make studying more engaging.

College-Specific Resources

Google Scholar: Google Scholar is a great place to find research papers and articles related to any scientific topic. For anyone who tries science research, you will inevitably find yourself looking for literature on one niche topic or another; if that day comes, check out Google Scholar.

OverLeaf: Another excellent online resource is OverLeaf. It is a live LaTeX editor that enables collaborative document editing and review. LaTeX is a typesetting system used in academic writing, and OverLeaf makes it easier to collaborate on complex equations and symbols.

When using these tools, make sure to spend a few minutes playing around with them and testing their limits. Each can be very powerful, but it will take time to learn the full capability of any tool.
