Best Free Online Resources: English / Literature Edition
For this week’s list of online resources, we will be covering online tools to help with English / Literature classes.
Here are some of the best free resources we’ve found so far:
Grammarly – Grammarly is an excellent tool to help improve your written English skills. It provides automated grammar and spelling checks, as well as suggestions for improving your writing. You can install it as a Chrome extension or on your desktop.
Hemingway - Hemingway is a great resource to help you simplify your writing and make it easier to understand. You can copy and paste your text into the online editor to check it for readability, grade level, and much more.
Project Gutenberg – Project Gutenberg is a fantastic resource for free ebooks that are in the public domain, including many classic novels and works of literature. If you’re trying to save on book purchases for the upcoming school year, Project Gutenberg can be a great resource.
SparkNotes & CliffsNotes – SparkNotes provides summaries and analyses of classic and modern works of literature, as well as study quizzes and other resources for studying literature. Similar to SparkNotes, CliffsNotes is another great resource for getting help with your literature studies. It also provides summaries and analyses of many classic and modern works. Use these carefully - it’s important to think critically even as you read these summaries in order to construct your own opinions and analysis.
EasyBib – EasyBib is a great resource for students who need to cite their sources. It helps you to generate citations quickly and is available as a Chrome extension and on mobile. While we’re on the topic of citations, you should also check out the Online Writing Lab (OWL) at Purdue University. This website offers resources for writing/citations in various styles, such as MLA and APA, as well as resources for grammar and mechanics.
Quizlet - If you have to memorize vocabulary, Quizlet is a fantastic resource to facilitate that learning. It provides the ability to create your own personalized flashcard sets with just about any material you need for class. You can even create fun multiple-choice quizzes to help you practice.
ChatGPT - You’ve no doubt heard of the wonders of ChatGPT. ChatGPT’s power lies in its intuition - it understands prompts well and remembers past responses, allowing the user to continually improve the output. However, students should be careful to not become too reliant on ChatGPT, as educators are sure to adapt to the growing use of AI. ChatGPT should be used to augment students’ skills and education, not replace them.
These websites are sure to help you succeed as you learn English / Literature. The support technology only continues to improve, so make sure to keep your eye out for new tools as they emerge!
